The brothers of the Columbus chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and the Golden Triangle Area Kappa League will host an anti-bullying program themed “Wrap Your Mind Around It” at 11 a.m. Oct. 29 at Northside Christian Church, located at 125 Cottrell St.

October serves as Anti-Bullying Awareness Month.

Kappa Alpha Psi President Vince Davis said Northside Christian Church Pastor Orlando Richmond, Jr. will say a special prayer for the community, fraternity members will wear orange headbands to go along with the theme of the program and anti-bullying and suicide prevention pamphlets will be passed out during the service. Attendees are also encouraged to wear orange.

Richmond said he planned to address anti-bullying and suicide prevention during his message on Sunday.

“Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and National Panhellenic Council is taking this opportunity to bring awareness of this issue in the month of October,” Davis said. “We have worked with Mississippi State University and Columbus Middle School.”

Davis said the inspiration for these events stemmed from the recent death of Starkville’s Armstrong Middle School student Mariah Issacs, whose mother Laoneda Ellis-Carpenter will attend Sunday’s program.

“We want to provide more information about how to contact suicide prevention and let youth know there are ways to reach out if they are having trouble at school or home,” Davis said. “The more we keep talking about it, the more it will help.”

Richmond said Davis is a church member, and Northside Christian Church has worked with several Greek organizations in the past.

“This was an easy call to make to support this,” Richmond said. “Anything like this the church will support, and the community should support it too.”
