The West Point Green Wave welcomed the Grenada Chargers to town on Friday and it was a little more of the same for the Green Wave.

While coach Chris Chambless and coach James Kuhn are close friends, there appeared to be no mercy, as West Point came away with a 48-0 win.

Chambless said earlier in the week he would not mention to his players that last Friday’s game would wrap up the region championship.

“We don’t want to focus on that as an accomplishment,” Chambless said. “We want to go all the way and win it; that’s our goal every year.”

Chambless said that he was relieved to get this game behind him, as he faced his good friend James Kuhn.

“We are very good friends and neither one of us take anything personal,” Chambless said. “We both got to play a lot of people tonight and that helps.”

West Point wrapped up the region, but Chambless said he has not spent much time rejoicing over that accomplishment.

Marcus Murphy led the way for the Green Wave, rushing for three touchdowns on 16 carries for 141 yards. Nate Montgomery added 122 yards and a score, while Chris Calvert added 81 yards and a touchdown.

“Marcus has a motor and he can take over a game for you quick,” Chambless said. ‘He’ll let you know ‘Hey, put it in my hands and we’ll win it.’”

The Green Wave got on the board first when Murphy hit Jason Brownlee for a 34-yard touchdown.

Murphy would follow that up with a 45-yard touchdown to give the Green Wave a 14-0 lead. Brownlee would corral his second touchdown catch of the day on a 50-yard reception from Jake Chambless, making the score 21-0 at the end of the first period.

Grenada would hold its own in the second quarter, as the Chargers did not allow a score until Murphy found the end zone with 23 seconds left in the half. The Greenies would take a 28-0 lead into the locker room.

West Point would increase its lead to 27-0 in the third quarter when Calvert hit paydirt on a 27-yard touchdown with 8:58 left in the quarter. Nate Montgomery would punch one in from three yards out to give the Green Wave a 34-0 lead at the end of the third quarter,

Archie Jones would help finish the game off, running for a 2-yard touchdown to give West Point a 41-0 victory.

Murphy was the lauded as the player of the game by the West Point coaches.

“We’ve got the turnover belt for the defense and we’ve got the playmaker chain for the offense,” Chambless said. “It’s just something that adds a little fun into the atmosphere on the sidelines and the kids take pride in trying to earn it.”

Murphy was 3-for-3 passing for 60 yards and a touchdown, while running for 114 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Chris Calvert finished with 110 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown, while Nate Montgomery added 108 yards on eight carries and a score.

Brownlee proved to be a big target for the West Point quarterbacks, as he caught three balls for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Jamel Banks had two quarterback sacks and Xavier Fair finished with five tackles, with two for a loss.

The Greenies will go on the road this Friday night to face Saltillo. The Tigers are 3-7 overall and 0-5 in Region 1.
