Clay County unemployment falls in August

The number of unemployed Clay County residents decreased sharply from July to August 2017.

According to the most recent data from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security, the unemployment rate decreased from 9 percent in July 2017 to 6.7 percent in August 2017.

Out of the 7,930 people who made up Clay County’s labor force, 7,400 were employed and 530 were unemployed in August 2017.

The unemployment rate of Clay County in August 2016 was at 7.7 percent which shows a 1 percent decrease for the year.

For August 2017, Oktibbeha County showed 5 percent unemployment, while Lowndes County was at 5.4 percent unemployment.

In August 2017, Rankin County remained ranked the lowest with 3.5 percent unemployment while Jefferson County remained ranked the highest with 14.9 percent unemployment.

Mississippi reported 5.1 percent unemployment for August 2017 and the United States showed 4.5 percent unemployment.
