The West Point High School Classical Choir, under the direction of Hillary Baird, scored all excellent at the Itawamba Community College District 1 Classical Choir competition March 3, in Fulton. This was the first time the choir had entered the competition level.
“During the competition we sang Camptown Races and Exsulate,” Baird said. “Exsulate is in Latin, so I was very proud of how well my students performed at the competitive level. I was very proud how well they performed together, especially as this was their first time.”
The class is still part of Dynasty Show Choir, but Baird said there has been a shift in the last few years away from competitions for show tunes and now more in the classical music genre.
“There are no more competitions for that type of music in our area,” Baird said. “So we have changed the direction of our music classes. It started years ago with six kids and now I teach three classes and have 60 students. I took 37 to the competition.”
