West Point Consolidated School District students can participate in National Walk to School Day on Oct. 4.

East Side, Central School and Fifth Street Students will meet at 7 a.m. at the Sally Kate Winters Park Gazebo, and Church Hill and South Side students will meet at the Bryan Foods parking lot at 7 a.m. to walk to their schools.

Growth Alliance Director Lisa Klutts said the students will begin walking at 7:25 a.m. sharp, and students will arrive at school in time to eat breakfast.

Klutts said East Side students must be accompanied by an adult to participate, and adults may walk with other students if they would like.

Klutts said Walk to School Day, which is celebrated across the country, promotes healthy lifestyles for children.

“It gives an opportunity for students who ride the bus or live far from school to walk to school,” she said.

Klutts said the Growth Alliance and WPCSD work closely with the West Point Police Department to ensure safety of the students walking to school during Walk to School Day, and there will be plenty of chaperones walking with the children.

Bikes will not be allowed.

Walk to School Day is sponsored by the City of West Point Mayor and Board of Selectmen, The Growth Alliance, Excel by 5 and Safe Routes to School.
