West Point Native recognized by peers

Sherry Knight is a native of West Point, graduated from West Point High School, and received her degree from Mississippi State University in Elementary Education. Life has taken her to be the Burlington City principal in both the Captain James Lawrence School and the Elias Boudinot School in New Jersey. She has recently been recognized as a "Visionary Leader" by her colleagues at the Burlington County Principal's and Supervisors Association in New Jersey. Knight has been a principal in the district for 15 years.

"We are both so proud of her," Gloria Minor, Knight's mother, said. "She got her start in education right here in the West Point School District. She graduated from West Point High School in 1984, She went to Mississippi State and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education in 1990."
Minor said she received a text message from Knight informing her of being chosen a "Visionary Leader" by the Burlington County Principals and Supervisors Association for demonstrating exceptional leadership and focus in supporting student progress in all areas.

"We were so happy for her," Minor said. "The recognition means a lot to her. She had also been honored with the LTC Theodore Cannon 2017 Citizen of the Year by the NU NU Chapter of Omega PSI PHI Fraternity. She is a very busy woman and is dedicated to her school district and her students."
Minor said Knight taught for three years in the Tuscaloosa School District. While she was living in Alabama, Minor said her daughter attended a National Baptist Convention in Memphis, where she met her future husband, Kevin Knight.

"He came from New Jersey for the convention," Minor said. "He took one look at my daughter and said she would be his wife. It took ten years, but he wouldn't give up until he married her. He drove all the way from New Jersey to Alabama just to surprise her. She continued her education at Cheyney University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she received her Master's degree."
Minor said the Kevin Knight's family promised to take good care of her when the couple married and made their home in New Jersey.
Minor said she has two granddaughters who are frequent visitors to their home in West Point.

"Brianna went to Mississippi State for a while, but she is going to school in New Jersey now," Minor said. "Jasmine is going to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. She plans to continue her education in Virginia. She wants to be a lawyer."
Claude Minor said that law would be a good fit for Jasmine, He said she is strong - headed,

"She should make a good lawyer," Claude Minor said. "Like most young people, she thinks she knows everything. If she thinks she's right, she stands her ground."
The Minor's wish their daughter didn't live so far away, but they are proud of her and her accomplishments as principal in the Captain James Lawrence School and the Elias Boudinot School in New Jersey.
