The West Point Planning Commission recommends a rezoning that could clear the way for a storage unit complex.

In a brief meeting Tuesday night, the commission granted property owner Ralph Nichols’s request to rezone about a half acre on the west end of a roughly 1.5-acre lot from R-1-S — residential small lots — to C-3 commercial.

The property is on the west side of Highway 45 Alternate on the north side of A Touch of Home restaurant. The portion of the narrow lot that fronts Highway 45 Alternate already is zoned C-3 commercial.

The Planning Commission’s recommendation will be considered by the Board of Selectmen at its meeting Tuesday night.

The back portion — about a half acre — was zoned residential. It sits at the end of Barksdale Drive which is a residential street. The western part of the property to be rezoned is adjacent to two houses.

The homes along the east side of Barksdale back up to commercial properties.

Nichols has told city leaders the potential buyer for the property is interested in building storage units. Another storage unit complex already is located just a few lots further south on the same side of Highway 45 Alternate.
