A man is dead after a shooting Sunday afternoon off of Fifth Street near Progress Park in West Point.

West Point Assistant Police Chief Kennedy Meador confirmed to the Daily Times Leader that a male victim was killed in the shooting and police are actively investigating the incident.

Clay County Coroner Alvin Carter identified the victim as 26-year-old Aaron Lamar Fenton of 447 Lone Oak Park in West Point.

"Right now, we are still investigating," Meador said Sunday night. "We have a person of interest right now, but I cannot release the name at this time. We will have more tomorrow."

Meador said WPPD dispatch received the call around 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

After police responded to the scene, Carter said Fenton was transported to the Clay County Medical Center and was pronounced dead at 2:43 p.m. Sunday.

Nobody else was injured in the shooting.

"There is no danger to the public," Meador said.

Carter said Fenton's body will be transported to the state medical examiner's office in Pearl for an autopsy.
