Northside Christian Church, located at 155 Cottrell St,. will host its annual Health Fair Plus from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 19.

Coordinator Dorothy Ryland said Health Fair Plus will have a mammogram mobile unit from North Mississippi Medical Center - Tupelo, and the unit will have time to provide free mammograms to about 18 women.

Ryland said NMMC-West Point will provide prostate screening for men at no charge and will provide lipid, blood sugar and cholesterol testing for a fee.

“The mobile mammogram unit, prostate testing and lipid, blood sugar and cholesterol testing are the three main things we’re excited about,” Ryland said.

Ryland said Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Norris Crump will provide a class for men at 9:30 a.m. that will allow men to ask any health questions they have.

Ryland said Wellness Center Director Tracy Arnett will be giving a CPR demonstration at 9:30 a.m., Point City Drugs will provide blood pressure testing, Eye Clinic of West Point will give eye testing, Aberdeen Health Clinic will provide diabetes screenings and Melanie Busby will be giving facials and foot soaks.

Ryland said there will also be informational booths set up with different vendors including Community Counseling Services, East Mississippi Community College and Fresenius Medical Care, and West Point Fire Department will have face painting and water games for kids.

Ryland said there would also be door prizes throughout the day, with the “early bird” prize at 8:45 a.m. to kick off the health fair.

Northside Christian Church Pastor Orlando Richmond, Sr. said Health Fair Plus was for all members of the community to attend and not only church members, and 150-200 people were expected to attend.

“The Health Fair Plus is for the whole community, and we have a lot of people come each year,” Richmond said. “It has gone amazingly well, and it has grown over the years.”
Richmond said the goal of Health Fair Plus was to serve the community through the church.

“My view of Christianity is that it’s all encompassing,” Richmond said. “It’s not just my preaching on Sundays and biblical teachings. It’s being impactful in the community, and one way of doing that is having this Health Fair Plus.”

Richmond said Heath Fair Plus has been successful in helping others be aware of potential health issues.

“For me, one way I know it’s being impactful is people becoming aware of health problems they may not have otherwise known about,” Richmond said. “That’s happened repeatedly.”

Ryland said a “Heathy, Tasty Feast” with several salad and fruits available will follow Health Fair Plus at 11:30 a.m. in the church’s Fellowship Hall.
