Six games into league play, Mississippi State head coach Ben Howland finally found the winning formula in a Southeastern Conference contest. It couldn’t have come at a better time. Facing in-state rival Ole Miss, MSU’s first-year leader guided his team to an 83-77 win on Saturday at Humphrey Coliseum. The victory snapped the Bulldogs’ five-game losing streak and helped MSU avoid going 0-6 in SEC play for the first time in 30 years. “I’m proud to be a Bulldog and I’m proud that we came out on top in my first opportunity to play against our rival,” Howland said. While Mississippi State (8-10, 1-5) broke through as a team, Malik Newman posted his best-yet performance individually. The highly-touted freshman guard led the way for the Bulldogs as he scored a career-high 25 points, including seven 3-pointers, just one shy of the school single-game record.
