West Point High football fans get a chance to meet the team, cheerleaders and band at the annual "Meet the Green' event starting at 5 p.m. today at the Green Wave stadium.

The stars of tomorrow also will show off when the junior high football team scrimmages at about 6 p.m., according to heard football coach Chris Chambless.

The Green Wave are the two-time defending 5A state champions and have won 28 in a row.

The Green Wave play North Panola at 8 p.m. Friday in the fall jamboree at Mississippi State University.

The Wave's opening game at Columbus has been moved to Thursday, Aug. 16 from Friday, Aug. 17 at the request of the home standing Falcons.

Kickoff for that game still is 7 p.m.
The Green Wave hosted Columbus on a Thursday night last year.
"They called and asked if we'd mind playing Thursday night and we said we would," Chambless said.

Coaches sometimes like to open with a Thursday night game, especially when it's a big rivalry game, to increase the gate by attracting fans from other schools. West Point will draw fans from New Hope, Caledonia and Noxubee County, among other places.

The Thursday night game also will allow Columbus and West Point coaches to go see other teams on their schedule Friday night.

After Columbus, West Point faces Louisville and then Starkville, which is one of the favorites to win the 6A state title this year.

The Wave plays in what is considered to be one of the top Class 5A divisions in the state with Lafayette County, Grenada and Olive Branch also highly touted this year.
