Lady Raiders name Mindy Bowman varsity head coach

Mindy Bowman will be coaching her first season as varsity head coach of the Oak Hill Academy Lady Raiders this year.

Bowman played at Oak Hill and recently moved back to the area and began teaching at the school.

Bowman started coaching the track team, and then the junior high girls basketball team. She will also be in charge of the junior high and varsity teams this season.

“I’m inheriting five very talented seniors that played last year,” Bowman said. “I’m looking forward to that senior leadership and experience that they all will bring to the team.”

The players that Bowman is referring to are seniors Maggie Gwathney, Julia Bristow, Emily Allen, Annabelle Miller, and Anna Kathryn Childress.

“Those five girls played on that state championship team from two years ago,” Bowman said. “That definitely goes a long way as far as experience.”

Bowman said this year’s team will be doing things a little differently than before, as she plans to implement the full-court press and play with a faster tempo.

Bowman also said she will be relying on her underclassmen to provide valuable minutes off the bench.

“I’ve got a good underclassman group. The ninth-graders that have moved up won the district last year, so we’ve got a good cast,” Bowman said. “We’ve got a good inside game and some great three-point shooters, so it is going to be a well-rounded team this year.”
