Hebron boys look to improve on winless 2017 season

The Hebron boy’s varsity basketball team returns all but one player on a team that went winless in the 2016-17 season.

“We were just so young and lost only one senior,” Hebron Christian head coach Gary Vaughn said. “I’ve got them all coming back, but they were freshmen and I had a couple sophomores last year.”

The Eagles will still not have any seniors this year, as they will rely on juniors Gabe Harpole and Thomas Gable for leadership, along with sophomore Adrian Borst. Eight of the players on Hebron’s varsity roster are freshmen.

The fact eight freshmen are on the varsity and junior varsity rosters makes for an interesting situation for Vaughn, as the players can only play in six quarters per night, across both games.

“I’ve never had to coach under the circumstances before,” Vaughn said. “I’m in the business, right now, of just trying to keep up with their quarters and making sure that I don’t overdo it with six.”

Vaughn said he will be starting Bradley Scott, Thomas Gable, Gabe Harpole, and Adrian Borst, along with Doug Loden or John Garret Lowe when the Hebron Eagles take the court against Winona Christian tonight.

Vaughn said that he will try and limit his freshmen players to only three quarters of play in the JV game, so that he can get a full three-quarters from them in the varsity game.

“I’ve never had to coach like this before,” Vaughn said. “You know, in my way of looking at basketball, the strength of a coach is knowing when he needs to substitute at what time and under these conditions it just changes everything up.”
