Former West Point detective indicted for theft

A former West Point police detective is indicted on embezzlement charges.

Shaun Keller, 41, was arrested Thursday and signed a waiver of arraignment in Clay County Circuit Court. His bond is set at $10,000.

If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

He is accused of stealing more than $3,000 from the department's evidence locker. The theft was discovered by Police Chief Avery Cook in the first month after he became chief last September and the Attorney General's office was called in to investigate.

The Board of Selectmen fired Keller in late October.

City Administrator Randy Jones said the city did not have a comment on the matter, as it is now in the legal system.

Keller had been with the police department since 2003.
