Tonight at 7 p.m., the wait will be over for Hebron Christian School head football coach David Foster and his Eagles as visiting Sharkey Issaquena Academy travel from the Delta for the season opener.

The Eagles did not field a varsity team in 2017, so Foster said he is looking for any leaders he can find to step up tonight.

The Confederates are led by coach Hunter McIntire and come off a 4-5 campaign in in 2017.

As for the scouting report for the 2018 SIA squad, Foster said they will also be a young team, but continued to say that they are always well-coached and talented.

“They normally run out of a spread,” Foster said. “They’ll pass a little bit too. They always have speed, some reason in the Delta they seem like they can run faster.”

Of the 15 players that will dress out for Hebron, eight are sophomores and two are juniors, while the rest are in junior high.

“Numbers are going to hurt us, but there are others with numbers similar to ours,” Foster said. “Most of them have some JV-age kids dressing out with them and that helps with numbers and substitutions and getting people rest.”

Without naming names, the players Foster will look at to step up to be successful will be his lineman.

“I’ve preached to them if you don’t block, you’re not going to move the ball,” Foster said. “Looking for leadership from all sophomores and one junior. And everyone I got.”

While Foster acknowledges the challenges ahead with a young team and resurrecting the varsity football program, he is still excited to be back under the Friday night lights.

“I’m excited about getting to play again,” he said. “I’m ready to go.”

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Hebron Christian School.
