McIlwain hosts rodeo events

CEDAR BLUFF — The Rockin’ (sic) McRodeo is hosting a pair of events this weekend. Starting at 5 p.m. Saturday, the “Top Roper Challenge,” will be contested by 10 ropers at the McIlwain Arena on Highway 50 West in Cedar Bluff. The arena will also host a benefit for injured roper Bubba Eacholes at 2 p.m. Sunday. Gates open an hour prior to the start of each respective event.

MAIS takes precautions on concussions

Concussions are a hot topic in the world of sports these days.
The Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) took steps before the start of the 2014-15 sports year with a new concussion information form, which has been handed out to student athletes. The form must be signed by the student athlete and parent or guardian before the student would be able to compete in their respective sports.

Hebron softball program looks for consistent pitching

PHEBA — Hebron Christian School softball coach Cass Tapley knows a thing or two about the commitment needed to become a competitive fast-pitch softball pitcher. His daughter Chloe Tapley was the queen of the pitching circle during her softball career for the Lady Eagles, striking out 1,507 batters.
Tapley in the past two seasons has had the tricky task of replacing such a dominant pitcher. For Tapley, there is not a lack of athletic talent at HCS, but a need for commitment inside the circle and the ability to get the ball across the plate.

Brescher defends title with 5-under round

Eddie Brescher finished strong in the final two rounds of the 40th Mississippi PGA Trustmark Invitational.
After shooting a 2-over 74 in the rain-plagued opening round Friday, the amateur from Hattiesburg played bogey-free golf on the last 36 holes to defend his 2013 title Sunday at Old Waverly Golf Course in West Point. Brescher completed the final round with a 5-under 67 with three birdies on the back nine, defeating two-round leader T.J. Morgan by one stroke —– an 8-under, 208 victory.
