The Lady Wave basketball team was at home Friday night playing host to district-rival New Hope. Both West Point and New Hope entered into the Friday match-up with perfect records in district 2 5-A and only one could leave without a blemish on their record.
Negative starts offensively for the Lady Wave allowed for the Lady Trojans to take a 12-0 run in the first quarter and never look back. New Hope continued to dominate throughout the game with the full-court press and great offensive play. The Lady Trojans were victorious over West Point 67-26 in district action.
“Win or lose, we wanted to learn from this game. New Hope has more experience and more people to put on the floor,” said Lady Wave head coach Kendall Pickens about the loss to the Lady Trojans, “no matter what happened in the game, we wanted them to continue working hard in the game and take it as a learning experience.”
Though the Lady Wave had a nightmarish first half trailing the Lady Trojans 39-8, West Point returned in the second half and fought very hard to hang with a difficult New Hope. Leading the Lady Wave in the second half was Alexis Gates, playing very well in the past few games for West Point. Gates contributed with a 12 point fourth quarter knocking down 2 three-pointers during the quarter. Gates had 16 total points on the night.
It was a very difficult first period for West Point as New Hope never allowed the Lady Wave to get much of a rhythm to start the game. After a 12-0 Lady Trojan run going midway through the first, there was not too much for the Lady Wave to do as the full-court press of New Hope was seemingly impenetrable. West Point attempted some damage control closing out the first period as Shamaya Lyles, Tyshia McCurry, and Gates, scored baskets for West Point. At the end of the quarter, New Hope only held a 16-6 lead over the Lady Wave.
The second quarter was full of free throws for New Hope as the Lady Wave put the Lady Trojans into the foul bonus. New Hope was 14 of 19 from the charity stripe helping the Lady Trojans to increase their already substantial lead. By the halftime interval, the Lady Wave had fallen behind to New Hope 39-8.
The second half was continued dominance for New Hope but with a little more Lady Wave involvement. The 21-point halftime deficit was too much for West Point to ever overcome as the Lady Trojans kept their perfect district record 67-26.
While Gates led the scoring column for the Lady Wave with 16 points, Qiayon Bailey and Shamaya Lyles followed behind her with 4 points. Also contributing offensively was Tyshia McCurry with 2 points against New Hope.
Now sitting with a 1-1 district record, the Lady Wave know there is a little more work ahead of them in the division. West Point will return to district competition next Friday, January 25, as they take on the Oxford Lady Chargers. These district games will be very important if they Lady Wave hope to create a shocking entrance into the postseason. “It does not matter what the record is right now, how we are playing right now, as long as we are constantly getting better” commented Coach Pickens about his hopes for the Lady Wave to mesh together, “with district tournament coming up, all it takes is one win and we will advance into the postseason. We just need to learn early because we have room to grow so we can try to peak at the right time in district.”
