Defense was the name of the game for the Oak Hill Academy Lady Raiders (7-5) on Thursday night. The Lady Raiders finished a decisive 71-19 victory over the Calhoun Academy girls. On Saturday, the girls finished off their first two-game winning streak of the regular season with a 55-34 win over Marshall.
“We played the best game of the year so far,” said Oak Hill head coach Stan Hughey of Saturday night’s win. “We beat a really good Marshall team. We put our whole game together.”
Things really never got off the ground for Calhoun, who hosted the Lady Raiders in the beating. In the first quarter, they did managed to score 11 points, but they allowed 23 to Tori Ellis and the Lady Raider offense.
That would be the final time Calhoun would reach double digit scoring. In the second, Oak Hill had an impressive defensive performance, holding the Calhoun girls to zero points in the period. The Lady Raiders’ 13 points were enough to propel them to a 36-11 half time lead.
The Lady Raiders scored 18 and 17 points in the third and fourth quarters, and the Calhoun team was only able to score eight between the final two quarters of the game.
Paige Dawkins and Tori Ellis both had 20 points on the night. Dawkins had 10 rebounds and two steals. Ellis had five rebounds.
Meagan Ellis scored 10 points, and Anna Ready had four points. Sophie Miller also had four points, and Rachel Hearndon had three, with seven rebounds and three steals.
Kayla Hall, Kim Kelly and Laura Billington had two points each.
In the game against Marshall, the Lady Raiders jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter. By the time the half time buzzer sounded, it was 27-8 in favor of host Oak Hill.
Oak Hill went on to out-score Marshall 15-12 in the third, and their 14 points in the fourth were plenty to defeat the visiting team.
In the game, Dawkins led the team with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Tori Ellis had nine points and five rebounds.
Hearndon scored 14 points and had seven rebounds, and Meagan Elliis had five points in the game. Hall scored four points with as many rebounds.
In junior high action, the Lady Raiders (6-4) had another sweep, taking Calhoun 51-10 and Marshall 30-22.
Sarah Dill led the team both nights, the first with 24 point and the second with 18 points.
Johanna Carnathan and Lexie Harden scored six each in the Calhoun game. Macey Allen and Alice Amelia Wooten had three points each. Shelby Tyler, Regan Brown, Casey Joe Langford and Mary Campbell Gray all had two points on the night.
Against Marshall, Allen was second on the team with six points scored. Bet Langely had four points, and Harden scored two.
