There is probably nothing a senior football player wants more than to finish his career as a player with a state title. In 2009, the West Point Green Wave seniors got to do that, claiming the 5A state championship.
While still one very long game away from having a chance to do it, the 2010 seniors will hit their home field tonight with a chance to play for the state title next Saturday night in Jackson.
“They start out with a goal every year,” said West Point head coach Chris Chambless. “They want to have a good pre-season, make the playoffs, win district, go far in the playoffs and eventually win a state title. They have not lost focus of that goal.”
West Point has 21 seniors on their roster, including leading rush Lakenderic Thomas and Mississippi State commitment Justin Cox.
The list of seniors goes on, but each one of them possess that goal. They want to finish their Green Wave careers champions.
“It’s like I told the team last week,” Chambless said. “We’re a bunch of survivors. Our community is a survivor. West Point’s all we got, so we’re going to go out there and protect our community, our school and represent.”
Kickoff is tonight at 7 p.m.
