Things got ugly early for the Oak Hill Academy Lady Raiders on Monday night. Facing the Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers, Oak Hill had trouble getting the ball to the net in the first three quarters, so much an 18-point fourth could not help them overcome the early deficit.
The Lady Raiders just had one of those nights. They put the shots up, but few fell in.
Just four points were scored by Oak Hill in the first quarter. All the while, Starkville was scoring at will, amassing 15 points in the opening period.
Things were still dismal offensively in the second quarter for the Lady Raiders, as they managed only nine points to Starkville’s 12.
Things did not get much better for Oak Hill in the third quarter. When the girls returned to the hardwood, they were only able to repeat their first quarter score total of four.
Holding Starkville to nine points in the third gave the Lady Raiders a fighting chance. In the fourth, they took advantage of that chance, scoring 18 points. Unfortunately for Oak Hill, Starkville’s 10 points in the final eight minutes sealed the loss.
On the night, Katelyn White had four points for Oak Hill. Paige Dawkins had three points and Tori Ellis had two.
On Tuesday night, the Lady Raiders returned to the court to take on Marshall Academy, on the road. Full coverage of that game will be in Friday’s edition of the Daily Times Leader.
Oak Hill will play Calhoun Academy on December 2, and they will return home on December 4 to take on Marshall Academy again.
That will be followed by a December 7 game at Winston and a home match against district rival Manchester on December 10.
