Though the high school football season has been over for a while, it is now time for the Bernard Blackwell All-Star game to be played this week. The Bernard Blackwell game features the North Mississippi All-Stars versus the South Mississippi All-Stars. The All-Star game is sponsored by the Mississippi Association of Coaches (MAC) and hosted on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The rosters for the North and the South are selected by member coaches of the MAC and were announced in the middle of October. The game will take place this Saturday December 22 and will be played at Gulfport High School.
West Point had three players receiving the honor to represent the North Mississippi All-Stars. Tez Lane (quarterback/running back) , Freddie Reed(defensive line), and Mario Virges (linebacker), have all been selected from the Green Wave and all three are very excited to travel to the Mississippi Gulf Coast this week. I had the chance to talk with them before they headed to the All-Star week activities.
What are you expecting out of this game, being your last high school game?
Lane: “We just want to make the best of this game; it is our last game as high school players.”
Reed: “It’s a great opportunity and I really don’t want to leave high school ball, and I’m going to love playing in the game.”
Virges: “I am going to play every play like it is my last because it truly is going to be my last high school game.”
With a talented roster on both sides, how do you see the competition side of the All-Star game?
Lane: “I have been told I’ll be used at quarterback and at tailback running a little toss and sweeps. It should be a good time.”
Reed: “It is going to be great competition and a challenge for me with people who are on my level.”
Virges: “I agree with Freddie, but some of the guys on the roster we beat during the season, and we will get to see what they got.”
This All-Star game allows you to display your talent one last time before you leave high school, what have you been doing to prepare for it?
Lane: “I have been running and lifting weights. I have not really been in pads, but I have focused on trying to keep my wind.”
Reed: “It’s a great opportunity to have one more chance; I have been working in the weight room so I can still have my strength.”
Virges: “I have been doing the same as everyone else; I just want to make sure I am able to compete with the best of the best in the state.”
