It’s time for Upward Basketball and Cheerleading again.
Evaluations begin Monday at 5:30 p.m.
This thriving ministry has been a part of West End Baptist Church’s outreach to the community for eight years, and it has grown in each year of its existence.
The unique structure of Upwards Sports places an emphasis on a spiritual atmosphere that involves sportsmanship and equal playing time.
“We are blessed to have this for the whole community,” said Gail Ray, an Upwards organizer for West End.
Upward Basketball and Cheerleading provides a positive sports experience for every child. The organization says that the number one goal is to make the most of the family’s time and money.
Upwards promotes a friendly atmosphere that includes life lessons at each practice by a trained coach.
“At every practice, there is a devotional,” Ray said.
Practices occur once a week. Play will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturdays during the season. While in the past, play ran typically until 5 p.m., Ray says it will be shorter this year because the church is not including sixth grade.
During the games, all children receive equal playing time. All players are awarded at the end of the game, and all will score at least once.
“Every child gets something,” Ray said. “It is all positive.”
Upwards is a ministry that is available to all children in the community.
Early registration for basketball is due by November 30, and the price is $60. After November 30, it goes up to $70.
The early registration for cheerleading is the same day and the same price.
Scholarships are available to children.
Deadline for registration is December 3. Basketball shorts are optional at the cost of $15, and cheerleading mock turtlenecks are optional for the same price. Evaluations take place Monday and Tuesday, beginning at 5:30 and ending at 7:30 p.m.
Practice begins Monday, January 7, and the first game is Saturday, January 19.
