Hebron Christian returned home in the final game of the season as they played host to Humphreys Academy from Belzoni, Mississippi.
It was Senior night and six players received honors on the night; Will Corbin Rogers, Taylor Coggins, Austin Foster, Jacob Ware, Tyler Doss, and Ryan Moore. Also Senior videographer, Carson Williams, and Senior cheerleader, Heather Jackson, were honored during the night’s festivities.
Hebron Christian received the first possession of the game, starting the drive on their own 45 yard line. After a few runs from Senior Coggins, quarterback Rogers scrambled out of the pocket on third and long completing a desperation pass to Coggins. After the third down conversion, the Eagles were able to cap the 3-minute drive with a 23 yard Coggins touchdown rush. The ensuing two point conversion was stopped by the Rebels bringing the score to 6-0. Humphreys, in their first offensive possession, had to punt the ball back to Hebron Christian. The Eagles also could not get the ball moving forward on their offensive drive resulting in a failed fourth down conversion attempt on their own 30 yard line. The Rebels found the end zone when they used the halfback pass from the 26 yard line. The two point conversion was good and brought the score to Humphreys’ favor at 8-6 with 1:12 left in the first quarter.
The Eagles did not find the second quarter much easier. Humphreys Academy used a 38 yard pass to begin the second quarter to set up a 29 yard touchdown run with 9:27 left in the first half. The resulting two point conversion was no good bringing the score to 14-6. Hebron could not catch a break on their next possession as a 55 yard touchdown pass was called back for holding. The drive ended on a Hebron punt. . Later in the second quarter, Hebron Christian began a drive on their 14 yard line. After stalling on three downs, Hebron attempted a punt, but the punt was blocked giving the Rebels perfect field position. The next play Humphreys pounded the ball into the end zone giving the Rebels a 28-6 lead with 22 seconds left in the first half. The half ended after 28 unanswered points from the Rebels.
The second half saw a wild opening as Andrew Myatt intercepted a wayward Humphreys’ pass. Hebron began the drive with 8:56 on clock but were unable to convert on fourth down with 6:58 left in the third quarter. Humphreys saw about the same success on the following drive resulting in a punt. Neither team could find the end zone until the Rebels made the breakthrough in the fourth quarter off a 25-yard touchdown rush with the ensuing two point conversion good. Hebron finally took a characteristic drive down the field. Though taking a majority of the needed time off the clock, the Eagles were able to find consolation when Rogers connected with Myatt on the touchdown pass. The following two point conversion was not converted bringing the final score to 36-12.
“I could not ask for any better season,” said Senior Ryan Moore, “I had a great time playing with these underclassmen and a great time playing with these Seniors.”
