CARROLLTON - A second half onslaught Thursday night helped the Oak Hill Raiders to a 70-37 win over Benton Academy in the Carroll Academy Christmas tournament.
Leading 26-24 at the half, the Raiders 11-6, outscored Benton 44-13 in the second half to lead them to victory.
"We looked a little sloppy in the first half," head coach Brian Middleton said. "We went on a run midway throughout the third quarter and played a lot better defensively."
Both squads were evenly matched in the first half of the ball game, but the Raiders at times really struggled to score and the defense wasn't up to par. That quickly changed at the break. Oak Hill led by four points after the first quarter.
The Raiders, led by John Wesley Williamson who scored a season-high 27-points, blew the game wide open outscoring Benton 21-11. They didn't miss a beat in the fourth knocking down 23-points while their defense clamped down, holding Benton to just a field goal.
The Raiders have a week off before traveling to Kirk for the second time this season and play the host team in the first round. This year, they are 2-0 against the navy, red and white Raiders.
"We need to step up our game," Middleton said. "When you win six in a row, you need to be challenged."
Their 70-points was the second highest point total of the season.
AJ Jones finished with 14-points and Reid Posey rounded out the top scorers with 10.View more articles in:
