West Point was highly represented on the 2011 5-A Region 1 squads recently selected by the coaches from each school.
In all, the Green Wave had 17 players honored including 10 on the offensive side of the football, the most of any team in the district.
Senior QB Dequinten Spraggins was named Offensive MVP after putting up stellar offensive numbers with his legs and arm. On the year, Spraggins threw 67-of-141 for 1,023-yards and seven touchdowns. He also reached the century mark on the ground, rushing for 1,130-yards and 14 touchdowns on 110 carries. Defensively, he finished with eight tackles and two picks.
Junior Tez Lane and sophomore Aries Williams were named to the First and Second -Team at running back respectively. Lane finished second in rushing behind Spraggins with 1,089-yards on 137 carries and 11 touchdowns while grabbing 11 receptions for 117-yards. Williams finished just shy of 800-yards and 12 touchdowns. Mario Virges, who had 203-yards and three scores, rounded out the backfield honors with a Second -Team selection.
TJ Minor was a Second Team selection at tight end after grabbing half a dozen catches for 131-yards and William Harrell was tabbed a First-Team honoree with a team-best 346 yards on 23 catches and three TD. On the line, Alex Hall (Second-center), Romia Wilson (First-guard), Jonathan Jones (First-tackle) and Carson Miller (Second-tackle) rounded out the offensive unit.
Jerry Randle, Eddious Webb and Roger Thomas were selected honorable mention.
The Green Wave had four players selected defensively including First-Team mentions linebacker Brandon Edwards and tackle Freddie Reed.
The pair finished in the top three in tackles on the year with 74 and 70 respectively. The duo combined for 10 sacks on the season Reed also finished with a pair of fumble recoveries including one for a touchdown.
Antrean Bennett and Ed Brown were named Second-Team selections at defensive end. Brown led the team with seven sacks and had 62 tackles. Bennett finished with 58 including three sacks.
Several West Point players will suit for the final time in their high school careers this month. Wilson and Edwards were selected to represent Mississippi in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic set to play Dec. 10 in Montgomery, Alabama.
Spraggins, Miller and linebacker Charles Heard will represent the North in the Bernard Blackwell Game scheduled for Dec. 17 in Biloxi.View more articles in:
