Julie Ready’s 18 and Under Advanced tennis team brought home a second place victory from the 2010 Junior Team Tennis State Championship held in Jackson last weekend after they fell to team St. Amant of Ocean Springs in the final round. Eight teams from around the state qualified to compete on the Advanced level.
Earlier victories against Laurel Country Club, Bayou Bluff of Gulfport and Battlefield 18 of Jackson brought the team in reach of the state title for the second year in a row. The team won the 14 and Under Advanced title last year. Ready, however, is not discouraged. Her team is young with the oldest players just entering 10th grade this year, and according to the coach, the competition was the best the team had faced this season and most of the matches were close.
“The kids played great. I was really proud of them,” said Ready.
West Point’s team is made up of Anna Ready, Jessi Cole, Kim Kelly, Conner Baird, John Wesley Williamson, Will Kelly and John Willis Stevens, who was out due to illness. Paul Michael Calhoun joined the team to play boys singles.
West Point got off to a good start sweeping Laurel County Club. Calhoun defeated Matthew Martin 4-1, 4-3; Ready defeated Katie Reid 1-4, 4-0, 1-0; Baird and Williamson defeated Joshua Earl Agee 2-4, 4-3, 1-0; K. Kelly and Cole defeated Stephanie Smith and Rachel Jefcoat 4-0, 4-2; and W. Kelly and Ready defeated Anna Axton and Dillon Mooney 4-2, 2-4, 1-0.
