Oak Hill returns to the field tonight after a much needed week off from competition. The Raiders move out of district play and travel to Grenada to face Kirk Academy.
“The break definitely helped us,” head coach Benjie Merchant said. “It gave us a chance to get the ninth graders acclimated to our system so they’ll be ready to go.”
The JV season ended several weeks ago so now they will be eligible to play varsity football for the last two games of the season. The move will no doubt add a little more depth and some speed to some key areas on the team.
“Not everyone of them will play, but several will see significant time,” he said. “It’ll help us.”
Kirk comes into the ball with a 3-6 record after dropping their last two and starting the season 1-4. Merchant said they have weapons in the backfield and at quarterback and will more than likely run the football in every direction.
“There a solid football team,” he added. “This is more in the realm of a team we can compete with all night.”
Kirk was able to put 21 points on Indianola in their last outing without throwing the ball too many times.
“We need to try and contain them, be in the right place at the time,” Merchant said. “If we let them get out in the open, they’ll hurt us.”
The Raiders are looking to snap an eight game losing streak under Merchant where they have been shut out in four of the last five ball games.
If anything, losing eight consecutive games should be motivation enough to get a win. Merchant said over the last few weeks, the tempo at practice has been high and players know they need a win.
“The kids are putting the time in,” he said. “It’s just going to be a matter of if we tackle and stop them on defense.”
Kick-off is set for 7:30 pm.View more articles in:
