Oak Hill Academy isn’t off to the best of starts in 2011. The Raiders are 0-2 and have scored just two touchdowns this season.
Head coach Benjie Merchant knows it’s going to be a tough first season early on, but the question is how long will it be before they can turn things around.
‘We’re just not ready to play in that caliber of a game yet,” Merchant said in reference to last week’s 41-6 loss to Winston Academy.
“We’re trying to work on our passing game. Blocking has got to get a whole lot better. But I thought we ran the ball decent, we just don’t have that back that can take it to the house.”
A third quarter drive by the Raiders set up their lone offensive touchdown on the season, Reid Posey crossed the goal line from a yard out after recovering a Winston fumble a play earlier. He finished with a team best 84 yards rushing.
“That was a plus,” Merchant said. “It shows that were are capable at running this offense. It was definitely a big morale boost for us.”
Merchant said the team is slowly building confidence among themselves again, which was something they lacked after a struggling 3-6 year.
QB Conner Baird will miss today’s game because of a concussion he suffered last week. Jeb Stevens and Clay Henley will take over under center.
Indianola have had some troubles of their own this season. After blowing by Bayou Academy 50-21, the Colonels fell to Lee Academy 18-6.
“These guys are hard to break down,” Merchant said. “It looks like they’re in the same boat we are, so it out to be a good game.”
The Colonels, Merchant said, have a good offensive system and enjoy running the football with multiple threats at quarterback and running back.
Merchant said its a little tougher trying to win on the road, especially since the Raiders have been at it for back-to-back weeks.
“It’s hard especially after how it went down at Winston and then have to turn around and go that far,” he said. “It makes a tremendous difference. But it’s a part of trying to build this program.”
The Raiders will have breather the following week when they come back home and take on Manchester in district action.
Tonight’s kick-off is slated for 7:30. at Legion Field.
