Mamie Allen didn't have the stuff she displayed in Oak Hill's season opening win over Heritage Academy last Friday, but then again, she really didn't need it.
Oak Hill rallied for three runs in the third inning Monday night to pick up their second consecutive win over an MAIS Class AAA school after defeating Starkville (1-3) Academy 4-1.
"It was an ugly win," head coach Marion Bratton said. "But we made some plays when we had to. Our selection on some of our choices for outs wasn't quite what we practiced."
With two outs in the top of the fifth inning and trailing by two runs, the Lady Vols had runners on second an third when a soft ground ball was hit back to Allen. She threw it to home plate and the runner was tagged to end the inning.
Despite the close call that could have changed the momentum, the Lady Raiders added an insurance run in the bottom half when Allen's single to left field was enough to score Anna Lummas from second.
After two innings of shutout softball, the Lady Vols rallied for the game's first run in the top of the third inning when Adriene Futral slapped a single to get on first and later stole second before Lauren Ware doubled to give them the lead.
Oak Hill responded in the bottom half when Meagen Ellis hit a two run double that scored Hunter Coleman and Jessie Cole.
Bratton said the girls looked like they were still recovering from the weekend, and would have preferred to practice Monday, instead several games early in the year will be bumped up because of football.
Allen (2-0) struck out four batters but did give up six hits in the win. Bratton said it helps to have a lead going into the late innings.
"Always when you get the lead it does take the pressure off of us," he said. "Most everybody can play a little more relaxed but we had a chance to break this wide open in the fourth inning. We had the chance to pick up two or three runs with one out and we couldn't do it."
Allen;'s counterpart Julianne Jackson gave up three hits and struck out three.
Oak Hill will be on the road at Calhoun County this afternoon.View more articles in:
