Dozens of future Green Wave turned out this week for a three-day youth football camp hosted by West Point High School.
Athletes, ranging from ages 7 and up, had individual and group sessions with players and coaches from the football program. But it wasn’t all about football.
“It was a great turnout, especially with the youth aged campers,” varsity running backs coach Josh Pulphus said. “They received a lot of instruction about academics, being good role models for other students and trying to stay humble.”
Coaches touched on the basics of football including receiving, blocking, passing, catching and kicking along with conditioning and weight training.
Several West Point football players took some time out of their summer workouts to help out the coaches.
“I think some of the players enjoyed it more than the kids,” Pulphus said. “To see kids look up to their neighbor or friend and see how hard it is to play football for West Point, they were really amazed with it.”
Pulphus said the kids got a chance to witness the day-to-day operations of the weight lifting program and the proper techniques to getting bigger and stronger.
“They were astonished,” he said. “They wanted to be just like them and work as hard as they did.”
Football has a come along way over the last 30 years with players getting stronger, faster and bigger every year. Pulphus said camps like this one aren’t necessary from a young age, but it wouldn’t hurt to get a head start especially if it’s close to home.
“Some of the parents can’t afford these bigger camps,” he said. “We try to have it each year were families can trust us with their kids and be apart of West Point football. It’s their community and their school.
It’s just something nice for the kids to have without being so expensive.”
