There is much going on right now at the West Point Parks and Recreation Department. Parks Assistant Director Jarrod McDaniel says that there is even more to come over the next year.
As soon as the department gets the uniforms back, the 2011 youth basketball season will commence. McDaniel said that they are hoping to get started by next week. That will include the 12 and under league and a 13, 14 and 15 year-old league as well.
This is also the final month to sign up for Dizzy Dean t-ball, softball and baseball. The Parks Department is hoping for an April 4 start to the season, so that things do not run into the All-Star season in June.
“We’re really wanting to get off to a good start with that,” McDaniel said. “Hopefully, we’ll get started the first week of April.”
McDanile says that he will be attending a meeting this weekend in Greenwood to discuss the rule changes with Dizzy Dean that occur every two years.
McDaniel says that parents need to come in as soon as possible to sign up for Dizzy Dean. This will help the department to determine early on how many teams are going to be needed, as well as uniforms.
McDaniel said that the Parks crew is already starting to do work on the fields at the city complex.
The Spring will also bring the start of a series of tournaments that will be hosted in West Point, with the first being on March 11-13. There will be one in April, two in May and a final one in June.
“These bring money to the whole community,” McDaniel said. “These people eat at our local restaurants, shop at our downtown between games, and they stay at our local hotels.”
The Parks department hosted a tournament similar to this back in May of 2010.
As summer approaches, McDaniel says that the department will be doing sign-ups for adult volleyball that will be played at the Parks office site. Sign-up for that begins on May 1, and it will run until June 30.
