The fourth annual H & R Block bake sale to benefit Relay for Life hopes to continue its record of exceeding the amount previously raised. The first year of the bake sale raised $243, the second year over $400 and last year $900 was donated to Relay for Life by Team H & R Block, according to Libby Montgomery, H & R Block associate and cancer survivor.
“The people here at H & R Block started the yearly bake sales because of my battle with cancer,” said Montgomery. “I appreciate it so very much that they want to help Relay for Life. We have a lot of local businesses that donate amazing baked goods, along with people who are baking from their home and give the items for us to sell. We are going to have some delicious pies, cakes, cupcakes and breads to sell.”
The bake sale starts at 9 a.m. and continues until everything is sold, Montgomery said. The sale takes place in the H & R Block parking lot on Highway 45 Alternate South.
“This is my first year to take part in the bake sale,” said Joyce Washington, an associate of H & R Block. “It is so important to help Relay for Life, the money goes for cancer research and hopefully we can all help in finding a cure. We want the whole community to come and buy something sweet for themselves while they help further cancer research. It’s a great cause.”
Montgomery has battled breast cancer, cancer of the lymph nodes and pancreatic cancer. She said the years of 2009 – 2010 were full of diagnosis, treatments, surgeries and more treatments. She is now cancer free, but returns for screenings every six months to check for any new developments and is happy to report no signs of cancer.
