MACON — Only leading by two points at halftime, the Quitman Lady Panthers proved their mettle in the second half, pulling away from the West Point Lady Wave for a 55-41 win Saturday afternoon at the Coleman-Triplett Classic on the campus of Noxubee County High School.
Shamaya Lyles and Alexis Gates led a reeling West Point (3-7) with 13 points each -- leading all scorers. Qiayon Bailey added six points in the losing effort.
Palexus Pittman led Quitman with 10 points -- the only Lady Panther to reach double figures.
The Lady Wave faced a six-point deficit at the close of the first quarter but was able to minimize the deficit in the second quarter. West Point’s Lyles provided seven points and Gates added six, closing the Quitman advantage in the final moments of the first 16 minutes, 24-22.
The Lady Panthers created seperation with a six of 10 shooting performance from the free-throw line in the second quarter, which turned into a strong second half where Quitman outscored West Point, mainly from the floor, 31-19.
The Lady Wave won the first two contests of December but have dropped the past three consecutive contests to non-district opponents, including losses to Noxubee County and Tupelo.
