There were plenty of hugs, smiles, laughter and a few tears as Mary Helen Waggoner, director of the Tombigbee Library System for 15 years and a fixture in Golden Triangle libraries for 47 years, retired. People lined up in the hallway and outside the Esther Pippen meeting room to shake Waggoner’s hand and wish her nothing but the best as she starts a new phase of life.
“I cannot say enough about Mary Helen and what she has meant to the Bryan Public Library,” said West Point Mayor Robbie Robinson. “She loves this library and has been tenacious when it comes to procuring the funds to keep it running. She did more with less as state and federal funding for libraries seemed to always be on the chopping block. Mary Helen kept this library at the top with hard work, dedication and diligence. I would not have wanted to stand in her way.”
