My third-grade teacher, Mrs. Bryant, had instructed my classmates and me to complete a notebook that would display our penmanship in cursive, something that I still consider a monotonous, unrewarding task.
The project enlisted us to write the capital letter and the lower-case letter of each letter in the English alphabet, in cursive 50 times. I did the math – I had just learned my multiplication tables – and it seemed like an implausible thing to do as a little third-grader.
There are 26 letters in the alphabet, times two equals 52, multiply that by 100 and you get a lot of pen strokes.
