Oak Hill Academy played host to Victory Christian of Columbus Thursday in the season and home-opener for head coach Marion Bratton and his Diamond Raiders at Bill Ayces Field in West Point.
It was a cold and windy evening, but Adam Tumey was red hot for Oak Hill in his first appearance on the mound for the 2013 season.
Tumey struck out 9 batters, gave up 2 hits, and walked only 4 in four complete innings. With that pitching performance, the Raiders took their first win of the season over Victory 6-1.
“This game was our first time on the field as whole team,” commented Coach Bratton about the win, “I am satisfied where are after tonight.”
Not only were the Raiders pitching well, Oak Hill had good fortune getting hits and moving runners around on the base path. A two-run bottom of the first gave the Raiders the lead for good with two RBI doubles from Curt Huffman and Tumey. In the bottom of the third as well, Oak Hill’s Conner Baird knocked a fly ball into shallow center for a sacrifice fly which scored Riley Pierce from third base to give the Raiders a 3-0 lead over Victory. A one-run bottom of the fourth gave the Raiders a 4-0 lead and a two-run bottom of the fifth gave Oak Hill a 6-0 lead over the Eagles.
Victory left many runners stranded during the game, and against the Raider’s pitcher Brandon Westover, the Eagles were finally able to score an unearned run on Oak Hill to bring the game to its final score 6-1.
Oak Hill will take on district-mate Leake Academy on Tuesday. The Raiders will then play Leake in Madden on Thursday for the two-game series to open district 2-AA.The action will get started at Ayces Field at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday.
