In Tuesday’s contest between Oak Hill Academy and Columbus Christian, neither team came out shooting well, as it was nearly halfway through the first quarter when the Rams took a 1-0 lead on a made free-throw by Anna Minga.

The Lady Raiders were 0-for-the field in the first quarter and trailed 4-1.

“We missed 27 layups. Wide open, uncontested layups,” Oak Hill head coach Mindy Bowman said. “That’s 52 points.”

Oak Hill would start to find the hoop early in the second quarter, as Emily Allen sank a three-pointer to give the Lady Raiders a 6-4 lead. A layup and three-pointer by Maggie Gwathney capped a 10-0 Oak Hill run, putting the Raiders up 11-4.

Oak Hill led 14-9 at the half.

The Lady Raiders would open up the third quarter on a 9-0 run, aided by an Annabelle Miller layup, followed by a steal and score by Anna Kathryn Childress, along with a three-pointer by Gwathney for a 23-9 lead. Oak Hill had started to pull away at the end of the third quarter, leading 33-15.

“We got our momentum going a little bit and got our chemistry working a little bit,” Bowman said. “We just started playing like we were capable of playing.”

Oak Hill would maintain that 18 point lead throughout the fourth quarter, winning 45-27.

Anna Kathryn Childress led Oak Hill with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Columbus Christian’s Celia Peal led all scorers with 16 points.

Emily Allen added eight points, while Annabelle Miller finished with eight points and three steals.

Gwathney scored seven points and grabbed five boards.

Oak Hill dropped its opener to Leake Academy last Thursday and Bowman said she thinks the win against Columbus Christian will be a good confidence builder for her team.

“Any time that you can get a win, it’s a good thing,” Bowman said. “It’s just going to be about us moving up that hill and getting that flow of the game back.”

The Lady Raiders (1-1) will travel to Hebron Christian tonight to face the Lady Eagles.
