The Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop G reported no fatalities over the July 4 holiday enforcement period, which began July 1 at 6 p.m. and ended July 4 at midnight.
Troop G covers Clay, Lowndes, Oktibbeha, Webster, Winston, Noxubee, Monroe, Choctaw, Chickasaw and Calhoun counties.
Troop G Public Affairs Officer Trooper Fist Class Gregory R. Bell attributed the lack of fatalities to heavy enforcement in the district, maximum visibility and extra effort from off duty troopers, who volunteered to work overtime to make up for a shortage of man power.
During the holiday period, Troop G investigated 12 collisions, one of which involved alcohol, and issued 956 citations. Troopers made 16 DUI arrests, four narcotic arrests and four felony arrests, along with 34 seatbelt citations and seven child restraint violations.
There were six fatalities statewide during the enforcement period, including on in Brookhaven, three in Meridian and two in Batesville.
