The Sept. 25 final score was illuminated on the scoreboard throughout the week of preparation at McCallister Field in West Point. Green Wave 28. Oxford 50. The players and coaches have constantly been reminded about the infamous score in Region 1-5A action.
A highlight video shot by NewsWatch, the University of Mississippi’s student news station, accompanied the score. It boldly suggested West Point should learn a lesson in football and also class.
Sixty-three days have passed since the first meeting. West Point has won eight straight games. Oxford’s winning streak rests at 10 games. Both teams have an 11-2 overall record. At 7 tonight, the Wave and the Chargers square off in the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class-5A North State Championship game at Bobby Holcombe Field in Oxford. One team goes home. One team plays for the MHSAA Class-5A state title.
“The rivalry really comes from us,” West Point’s Scott Lashley said. “We want to get back up there and get the ‘W’. We also want to end those rumors that are said about us by coaches and videos. We know those things aren’t true. It’s just added fuel to the fire.”
Oxford maintains a four-game winning streak, including two wins in the 2014 season, over the Wave. Before the Chargers’ string of victories, West Point had won eight consecutive over the blue and gold. One win included in the streak was West Point’s 24-14 win in the 2005 North State Championship game. However, West Point’s winning streak is in the past, and the program has not made the Class-5A championship game since 2010. Oxford has been back-to-back season but failed to win.
“This week’s motivational tool is who we are playing,” West Point Head Coach Chris Chambless said. “We got to fix some things that were broke when we last played them. We have worked hard throughout the season on those things. It’s all about execution on game night.”
