Daily Times Leader finishes its countdown of West Point's Top 5 Games of the 2014 football season today (Saturday). The Green Wave made its 14th consecutive playoff berth last season, finishing with a 9-5 overall record. West Point was the No. 3 seed in Region 1-5A behind No. 2 New Hope and back-to-back champions Oxford. Head Coach Chris Chambless and his team defeated Germantown High School in the opening round of the postseason before falling to Class 5-A runner-up Oxford. The Wave opens this season against Louisville High School at 7 p.m. on Aug. 28 in Louisville.

NO. 1: Saturday's game recap highlights West Point's 28-14 over Germantown in the MHSAA Class 5-A opening round in Gluckstadt.

THE FACTS: West Point gambled on a fourth-quarter, fourth-down conversion as Dason Thomas connected with Steffon Moore for a 30-yard touchdown pass, sealing a 28-14 win over Germantown in a MHSAA Class-5A opening round playoff game Nov. 14 in Gluckstadt. West Point had a 14-7 lead at halftime with Tyler Logan's 3-yard touchdown run and Thomas' 11-yard touchdown scamper. After Germantown tied the game in the opening minutes of the third quarter, Logan added his second rushing touchdown, giving the Wave a 21-14 advantage.

THE STATS: Moore, who was always an aerial threat for the Greenies, had a standout game against the Mavericks. The senior wide receiver led West Point with 132 receiving yards and the critical touchdown. Senior running back Demontae Rush carried 22 times for 171 yards, and Thomas was 11 of 16 passing for 149 yards
The West Point defense improved its performance in the first round after allowing 51 points against the Lewisburg Patriots in the regular season finale. The Wave held the Mavericks to 32 yards on the ground and 141 passing yards, 193 less yards through the air than the week before. West Point also collected five sacks.

WHAT THEY SAID: West Point Head Coach Chris Chambless – “Our seniors have been great leaders this week. It is special for these seniors to get a playoff win on the road. They get to go home and play on their field one more time. Unfortunately, we have some injuries, but instead of folding up the shop, our guys stepped up and got the job done.”
West Point senior Steffon Moore: “It is not just me, my offensive line and my quarterback, Dason, give me the great opportunities to catch the ball. I was determined for this game not to be my last. I knew my name would be called tonight, and I knew I needed to step up and make plays … I wanted to bring a playoff game back for the community and to rematch against Oxford.”

WHY THIS GAME: West Point made sure it did not go home early as Germantown was put away. The win gave the Wave another shot a Oxford, as well.
The game was an old vs. new. Germantown, a new school on the high school football landscape, has done a tremendous job becoming a winner under Tim Shramek. West Point remains as a contender in Class 5-A though its starting to gain a little age. However, the old dog showed it had new tricks as it "upset" Germantown, the higher ranked seed.
I think this game was proof that the Wave still has the ability to win in the playoffs. It was important for West Point to remain a winner. Though West Point may not be a favorite this season for a state championship, I think the green and white has an opportunity to claim its eighth in a year or two.

THE NEXT MEETING: West Point and Germantown could possibly match up in the MHSAA Class 5A playoffs. I project it would be a second-round game when the Wave and Mavericks meet up again.
