Christmas has come and gone, but the gifts received have a ways to go. If a bike somehow finagled its way under a Christmas tree with a child’s name inscribed on an attached tag, but without a handy bicycle helmet, then good news is afoot. Beginning at 9 a.m. and pushing through to 2 p.m. Saturday, the West Point Police Department will host its second bicycle helmet giveaway in front of the department headquarters.
The WPPD held its first giveaway dishing out 200 bicycle helmets early October. WPPD DARE Instructor/Juvenile Officer Zate McGee said the department gave away upward of 130 helmets on the day of, but that left about, give or take, 70 helmets. What’s a problem without a solution, though? Following the giveaway, WPPD patrol officers traversed city streets, each with a bundle of helmets, and doled one out to each child spotted riding a bicycle without a helmet.
