WP Selectmen adopt updated meeting format

West Point Board of Selectmen and mayor have rejigged the city’s regularly scheduled board meeting format.
In February, selectmen incorporated a couple of new modifications to the flow and feel of its evening meetings by expanding on its department head reports, as well as adding a brand new 80-inch Samsung LCD television in the mix.
West Point Mayor Robbie Robinson said the spark that ignited the flame and moving toward the updated format was triggered by discussions on behalf of West Point citizens. Robbie said selectmen had heard individuals say they would like to see department heads give an oral report.
“The format with having the department heads making an oral report — there was some discussion from the citizenry who said they would like to hear from the department heads,” Robinson said. “All the department head reports are given to each of the board members in their meeting packets.”
Prior to February, as Robbie said, department heads attended the meetings, but their monthly reports were confined to print for board members. Those same reports, however, are available to the public, according to Robbie.
“All (department head) reports are free for distribution,” Robinson said. “(Citizens) can stop by City Hall ... if anybody wants a copy.”
Robinson said Gary Dedeaux, Ward 5 selectman, got the wheels rolling on moving forward with the oral reports from department heads.
“Gary Dedeaux came to me and said, ‘I’d like to have the department heads make an oral report. I think that’d be a good idea.’ And I said, ‘I do, too,’” Robinson said.
Robinson said the new television, paid for with the $400,000 Brownsfield grant acquired by the city in May, is a solid addition to the meetings because it provides a visual aid for the public audience.
“I think it adds a lot to our meetings,” Robinson said. “A picture’s worth 1,000 words.”
