A West Point woman is facing capital murder charges, following the death of her infant son.
Clay County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Brittania Smith, 24, or 904 Hillside Park in West Poing Monday after results from a Mississippi Crime Lab autopsy allegedly confirmed 2-month-old Brinston Smith had ingested a lethal dose of prescription codeine. The death was ruled a homicide.
Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott said on Dec. 20, emergency responders were dispatched to the residence in response to a 911 call of “a child not breathing.” Personnel took the infant to North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point, where he died later that day.
“Usually in a case that young, there’s always an autopsy,” Scott said. “Fortunately, we don’t have too many of them to deal with. ... The coroner had reason to believe an autopsy should be conducted.”
