The West Point Green Wave are gearing up for what could turn into a special season on the hardwood.
The West Point boys’ basketball team returned all five starters from last season’s 2012-13 campaign, making a winning season and a possible trip to the Mississippi Coliseum, “The Big House,” for the March MHSAA state tournament in Jackson the top priority for the team in the coming months of winter. Last Tuesday, West Point conquered a tall task on the road to Jackson, taking a 66-65 decision over the Tupelo Golden Wave on the campus of Tupelo High School.
“We are looking to go to Jackson this year,” West Point senior guard Tre Williams said. “We want to play to the best of our ability. It would be a big first state title in basketball for West Point. That’s what we want – a state title.”
Tupelo, an annual contender for a MHSAA 6A state championship, had held a 10-plus year winning streak over West Point teams and expected a win at its own venue. But West Point had other plans as the Wave would lead Tupelo, 32-25, at halftime.
