West Point wins edgy game over Starkville 61-57

December 1, 2012

Thursday night, West Point played host to the Okolona Chieftains. Also on Thursday, the Wave welcomed back their football players to the court. The Green Wave outscored the Chieftains 23-7 in the second quarter allowing for West Point to pull away and control the rest of the game. The Wave defeated Okolona 68-38. The top scorers for West Point against Okolona were Juan Davis (12 points), Tre Williams (10 points), and A.J. Jones (8 points).
On Friday night, West Point took on their fierce foe Starkville in a twelve-round fight. In a game that came down to the final minute, the Wave were able to pull out a close one over the Yellow Jackets 61-57. It has been a long time in recent memory since the Green Wave have found a win over Starkville in basketball and tonight is a good measuring tool for where the West Point basketball program is now.
“We want our program to be the best, and to be the best you have to play best,” commented Head Coach Brad Cox about the game against Starkville, “anytime you play Starkville and beat them you know you are on the right track.”
A series of runs dictated the flow of the first quarter as Starkville and West Point exchanged blows throughout. West Point’s Jones opened up the scoring with a three pointer, but the Jackets jumped out to an early 11-3 lead. After a timeout, the Wave went on an 8-2 run closing down the gap between them and the Jackets. At the end of the first, the Jackets were up 18-13. Starkville was hot from beyond the arc and continued that trend in the second quarter as the Jackets opened the quarter with a three-pointer. Yet the Wave were up to the challenge to keep up with the Jackets and finally regained the lead from Starkville with 50 seconds in the half. The West Point lead was short-lived though when Starkville closed out the first half with one last bucket and took the lead into halftime 32-31.
The third quarter saw five lead changes and Starkville continuing their dominance behind the three-point line. Starkville hit five three pointers during the quarter, but West Point gave relentless effort and were only down 49-47. The Wave were the better team during the fourth quarter and answered the call to rise up and take control of the game. Starkville was ahead 57-55 with three minutes left in the game, yet the Wave were able to bring the score level. West Point defensively pressed the Jackets and caused a turnover which fell right to Aeris Williams under the Starkville basket who layed the ball in for the go ahead. Jones and Aeris Williams iced the game from the free throw line and sent the West Point faithful into celebration. The Wave beat Starkville 61-57.
Scoring leaders for West Point were Tre Williams scoring 17 points and Aeris Williams with 11 points. Davis contributed 9 points and had 12 rebounds, also Peair Howard and Jones scored nine points each.
This win over Starkville is a huge win for the Wave and shows the right track which Coach Cox has West Point’s boys’ basketball team in. The Green Wave will return to the hardwood Tuesday December 4 against Noxubee County. Game time is set for ten minutes after the completion of the Lady Wave’s game.
