Something had to give on Friday night. The West Point Lady Green Wave hoops team and the Lady Chargers of Oxford both came into the game with only two losses on the season.
West Point had a 13-game winning streak on the line, and they needed a big win in just their second district match to take over first place in the division.
The streak would not be extended and the Lady Wave experienced their first district loss of the season, falling to a tough Oxford team 72-57.
West Point fell behind too far, too early in the week-ending match. Oxford completely shut down the inside game for West Point, and the Lady Chargers rebounded with precision.
Adrianna Billups was the first West Point player to score on the night, netting a two-point shot to make it 6-2 Lady Chargers. Billups would add another after Oxford scored another half dozen to make it 12-4.
Nearly half of the first quarter expired before West Point’s leading scorer, Kelsei Ewings, got on the board. She hit a pair of free throws, and then she added three more points before the period ended, but the Oxford girls’ misses were few and far between. They took a 21-9 lead into the second period.
In the next eight minutes, the Lady Wave finally brought their scoring game to life with 20 points. The defense however, could do nothing against the down-low attack of the Lady Chargers, who scored another 23 points to make it 44-29 going into the half.
In the second, Ewings scored 11 points Alexandria Morgan got her first shots in, scoring two, as did Wilma Davis and Nekeisha Walker.
After the break, the Lady Wave returned to the court, trying to get something going on the defensive side, but there was no stopping Oxford. The Lady Chargers did not make a single three-pointer all night, but they rarely missed under the goal.
Billups put up the first two points of the half, and Walker added two more of her own, and she would come out of the third with four points.
Morgan and Ewings were both held to two points each in the third.
Morgan would have a break-out quarter in the fourth, however, scoring nine points in the last eight minutes.
Oxford, however, never let up on the scoring end, putting in another 13 points.
West Point scored 17 in the final period, with Ewings only sinking six points. Taylor McCrary got her first and only shot of the night for two points as well.
Ewings was able to net 22 points on the night, with Morgan scoring 14.
Billups and Walker both scored six points for West Point.
The Lady Wave will be back on the court at New Hope on Tuesday night. Tip off will be at 6 p.m.
West Point will be back home to face Saltillo next Friday. The Lady Wave will have three more games, including a makeup game at Oxford, before they get set to host the District Tournament, starting on February 8.
