With just a week left to go in the regular season, every game is huge for the West Point Green Wave basketball team. Tonight, they will welcome in another district rival, taking on the Tigers of Saltillo, in a battle for first place.
“It’s a district game,” West Point Brad Cox said. “Right now, we’re in a three-way tie for first place.”
The Green Wave improved their mark in the district to 2-0 last Friday night, when they defeated the visiting Oxford Chargers. Three night’s ago, however, the Green Wave were unable to outlast the Trojans at New Hope, who defeated West Point in overtime.
That brings the overall district record to 2-1 coming into tonight’s game against a Tiger team that the Green Wave took down on December 17.
“We’re in a good spot because we control our own destiny,” Cox said. “If we win our games, we don’t have to have any help from anybody to finish the district in first place.”
The Green Wave will host New Hope next Tuesday, and they will finish district play at Oxford on Thursday.
“Every district game from here on out is a huge deal for us,” Cox said.
Prior to tonight’s game, the Green Wave will recognize five seniors. Cox said that their performance in this final week is very important.
“For the rest of the year, our seniors have to be our leaders, and they have to lead in the right way,” Cox said. “They have to be encouragers, and they have to pick everybody else up when they’re struggling.”
Cox says he expects his guys to have an extra bit of motivation tonight, playing in front of the home crowd.
“They’re going to be very emotional,” Cox said. “They’re going to want to come out, and they’re going to want to have a good night.”
The Green Wave will play one final non-district game at Noxubee next Friday night.
West Point will host the district tournament on February 8 and 11.
