West Point shows promising ability in Classic Games

November 8, 2012

A.J. Jones stepped up to the free throw line, West Point trailed 55-54 with only fifteen second left on the clock. “I just knew I had to step up and make them,” said A.J. Jones about getting the last two free throws. And made them he did, Jones knocked in both free throws allowing the Wave to get past Noxubee County in the Green Wave Classic 56-55.
As Coach Brad Cox explained, it will be close games like this that will make his West Point basketball team build more self-esteem and confidence. Though the team lacks a lot of varsity experience, the Green Wave victory on Saturday night shows a promising season for West Point.
“This group is very young and does not have too much playing time experience,” said Coach Cox about his Green Wave team, “there will be a learning curve, but I know we have a talented group.”
On Tuesday night, West Point traveled north to Tupelo to participate in the Tupelo Classic. The Green Wave played against the 2012 6-A runner up Tupelo in a very tight affair. The Wave kept it close throughout but lost 66-60 to the Golden Wave.
After losing 8 seniors from last year’s team, the Wave knows a good early start will help them succeed later on in the year. These classic games will make the Wave pick up more game time experience before the start of their regular season.
The West Point boys will open up their regular season on Tuesday November 13, when the Wave plays host to Hamilton. The next two game on Thursday November 15 and Monday November 19 when the Wave host Amory and Kemper County respectively. West Point will hit the road Saturday November 24, traveling out to the Houston tournament.
