Demarius Calvert is an offensive threat for zone defenses as he is always finding open space and getting high-percentage baskets.
Against the Saltillo zone, Calvert scored a game-high 25 points and helped the Green Wave with his 12 points during the third quarter to secure a pull-away win over the Tigers, 88-62, in the District 2-5A opener Tuesday night in West Point.
“We slowed down and started moving the ball around more on offense,” Calvert said. “We also played better defense (in the second half).
“Coach let me know to just post up and do my job,” Calvert added. “My teammates helped me in the post. Everything worked out nice.”
After an uncharacteristic first half, which West Point led 37-28, the Wave jumped out to a big third quarter, taking a 23-point advantage into the final eight minutes, 65-42.
“We came out in the third quarter and got back to our style,” West Point Head Coach Brad Cox said. “Especially on defense, our guys started moving into passing lanes to cause turnovers. We ran some transition off of rebounds, and I thought (Demarius Calvert) and A.J. (Jones) really stepped up in the third quarter.”
West Point placed five scorers into double figures against Saltillo. Outside of Calvert, starters A.J. Jones scored 16 points, Juan Davis added 12 and Tre Williams netted 10 for the Wave. Tony Craddeth scored 16 points off the bench.
