West Point captured the Class 5A Region 1 championship with a 62-0 win last Friday at Saltillo. This Friday, the Green Wave will be focused on completing an undefeated regular season and sending the seniors out with a win against the Lewisburg Patriots.

“It is special to be able to go undefeated," West Point head coach Chris Chambless said. "Especially with this group of guys; they deserve it. It’d be a good ending to the regular season, going into the playoffs with a lot of momentum too.”

Chambless said he has enjoyed this group of upperclassmen, as the 24 seniors and their families will be honored Friday night.

“Each senior group is unique and they all have their own personality, but the one thing that remains the same with all of them is that they all want to win,” Chambless said. “This group works hard and they know that if they lead in the right direction, they’re always going to have a shot to win a state championship.”

Lewisburg, who is 6-4 overall and 2-4 in the region, will not be going to the playoffs, but Chambless said they always play the Green Wave tough.

“They always play us hard and their seniors are going to play hard knowing this is their last game,” Chambless said.

Although Chambless wants the seniors to get their moment on Friday night, he will be focused on getting experience for his young guys as quickly as possible.

“These young guys, they practice every day and they’re a big part of our team," he said. "Everybody plays a role and they deserve a chance to play.”

West Point’s ability to get out to fast starts is a contributing factor in his young players being able to get so much playing time this season.

“We had a goal last week and that was to score 28 in the first quarter,” said Chambless. “We were able to do that and we controlled the game quick.”

The Green Wave will kick off their final regular season game of the 2017 season on Friday night at 7 p.m.

West Point defeated Lewisburg 53-17 in their meeting last season.
